The handbrake of your anxiety: the science of slow breathing and the vagus nerve

In today's pace of life it is very easy for the nervous system to end up running in an almost continuous state of hyper-alertness. It feels as if the body's accelerator — the sympathetic nervous system — is pressed to the floor, showing up as an elevated heart rate, persistent muscular tension and a mind that cannot slow down even to sleep.
Trying to "think positive" or talk the mind into calming down while biology is agitated is usually frustrating. Fortunately, the body has a direct physiological braking mechanism: the vagus nerve and stimulation of the parasympathetic system.
Breathing as the remote control of the heart
Breathing is the only autonomic function we can control both unconsciously and voluntarily, which makes it the "remote control" of the heart. Every time we exhale, intrathoracic pressure changes and activates mechanoreceptors that send signals directly through the vagus nerve to the brainstem.
This produces an immediate slowing of the pulse and an increase in heart rate variability (HRV), the metric that measures our body's capacity to recover from stress. When we breathe fast and shallow, however, we deprive the vagus nerve of this constant stimulation, leaving the anxiety accelerator switched on.
The resonance cadence: six breaths per minute
To engage this handbrake in a predictable, scientific way, the key is not random breathing but a specific cadence of six breaths per minute, known as the autonomic resonance rhythm. This pattern synchronizes the respiratory rhythm with the oscillations of blood pressure and pulse, sending an unambiguous message of safety to the brain.
