Where does the ego live? Meditation, the brain and the default mode network

We often notice that, when we sit down to meditate or try to stay silent, the mind fills with incessant inner dialogue. We catch ourselves reviewing the past, planning the future or judging our sensations. In neuroscience, this state of continuous rumination is linked to the activity of the Default Mode Network, a brain structure that activates when we are not focused on the present and which constitutes the neurological basis of the ego or the sense of "I".

Mental rumination and hyperventilation

When the Default Mode Network runs without interruption, repetitive thoughts feed states of subtle anxiety. This constant mental noise alters the way we breathe unconsciously: the breath becomes shallower, faster or more disordered.

By inhaling more volume than needed, blood carbon dioxide levels drop, which reduces blood flow and oxygenation to the brain. This creates a loop in which brain hyperactivity keeps the breath altered, and altered breathing sustains mental rumination.

The solution: modulating the network from the diaphragm

Calming the Default Mode Network is not a matter of trying to "go blank"; it requires intervening through the body. Voluntarily slowing the respiratory rate and using the diaphragm in a biomechanically clean way reduces hyperactivity in the brain areas associated with the ego.

Breathing softly and rhythmically stimulates the sensory pathways that bring attention back to the present moment, attenuating inner dialogue and allowing genuine mental serenity.
