How yoga rewires your brain and your mind

At the intersection of millennia-old Eastern philosophy and modern neuroscience lies a fascinating meeting point: the brain is not a fixed structure but a dynamic territory that changes with every thought, breath and state of consciousness.

In his celebrated work on Raja Yoga, Swami Vivekananda explains with visionary clarity how yogic practices directly alter brain matter, and why we feel such inner resistance when we try to transform the mind.

What is prana really?

It is often simplified as "breath", but breath is only its most accessible manifestation.

  • Prana is the vital force: the underlying energy that causes the movement of breath and animates matter.
  • The mental engine (chitta): mind-stuff acts as an engine absorbing prana from the environment and manufacturing it into different forms of energy, from the physical strength that sustains the body to thought, will and sensory perception.
  • Control of the nervous system: regulating the breath through pranayama is not merely slowing the lungs; it is taking control of the nerve currents and impulses running through the body.

The energy channels: Iḍā, Piṅgalā and Suṣumṇā

  • Piṅgalā: the current to the right of the spine, associated with active, solar energy.
  • Iḍā: the current on the left, linked to receptive, lunar energy.
  • Suṣumṇā: the central channel, an "empty" conduit running through the center of the spine.

In the average person, vital energy flows constantly through Iḍā and Piṅgalā to carry out daily metabolic and mental functions, while Suṣumṇā remains dormant. The aim of Raja Yoga practices is to awaken and direct prana into Suṣumṇā, opening access to higher states of consciousness.

Neuroplasticity and inertia: why the mind resists

The mind is like a needle and brain substance like a soft surface: every thought carves a street in the brain.

This describes exactly what neuroscience today calls neuroplasticity:

  • The law of least effort: human nature prefers travelling grooves and neural pathways already built, because it is easy and costs less energy. This explains mental conservatism and the tendency to repeat automatic patterns.
  • Resistance to change: when we meet a new idea or try to change a habit through yoga, prana attempts to open new channels in brain tissue, and the brain resists to conserve energy.
  • Why meditation feels hard at first: beginning the practice introduces thoughts and dynamics entirely foreign to habitual routine, and the nervous system feels off its usual track.

The infinite inside the cage of consciousness

Ordinary consciousness is trapped in the cage of time, space and causality. Ideas about the physical world feel familiar because we have travelled those mental grooves since time immemorial.

Yet when yoga practice opens us to the dimension of the infinite — what transcends the ordinary mind — the whole system is disturbed. To prevent this from becoming overwhelming, sages like Patañjali designed progressive, integral methods that let brain and body adapt gradually.

Redesigning your inner architecture

Yoga is neither a merely contemplative discipline nor physical exercise: it is a re-engineering of mind and body. Every time you sit to meditate, observe your breath or question an automated thought pattern, your prana acts as a needle carving new paths in your brain.

The resistance you feel at the beginning is not a sign of failure but proof that you are opening new avenues of consciousness where there was only inertia.
