The ego, yoga and the breath

In posture and movement classes there is a recurring pattern: the uninterrupted need to over-exert. When we try to force an alignment or hold a demanding posture at all costs, the breath usually becomes rushed, noisy or broken. This impulse to push past our limits without listening to the body does not come from awareness, but from identification with the ego and the narrative of achievement.

Reactivity drowns the practice and your energy

When the ego takes control during practice, the respiratory rhythm loses its balance. By disproportionately increasing the amount of air we inhale, we alter our internal biochemistry and overstimulate the nervous system. Seeking physical depth through abrupt effort creates muscular tension, raises perceived stress and compromises the biomechanics of the spine and diaphragm.

If the breath becomes agitated, the mind loses stability and the practice stops being a tool of regulation and becomes one more source of wear.

Slow nasal breathing as a physiological regulator

The key to dissolving that reactivity is not willpower, but control of airflow. Keeping the breath exclusively nasal, paused and light acts as a brake on the demands of the ego. If the air moving in and out is soft and fluid, the brain receives the signal that there is no threat out there.

Adjusting the intensity of the movement to your capacity to sustain a calm breathing pattern lets you regulate carbon dioxide tolerance and switch off the stress response. In this way, practice becomes a space to observe our mental tendencies.
