Emotions, breath and the nervous system

Emotions are not only abstract concepts; they are physical responses that show up immediately in the body. Anger, fear or anxiety instantly change the rate, rhythm and depth of the breath. Likewise, dysfunctional breathing sustained over time can trigger and perpetuate altered emotional states without us noticing.

The altered breathing pattern

Facing tension or distress, we tend to sigh, yawn frequently or breathe through the mouth using only the upper chest. These patterns send a constant alarm signal to the brain, keeping sympathetic tone switched on.

The excessive loss of carbon dioxide that occurs when we hyperventilate narrows blood vessels and increases nervous system excitability, making us react disproportionately to everyday stimuli.

The solution: breathing re-education as a path to self-regulation

Breathing is the only autonomic process we can consciously direct. By intentionally modifying the cadence of the air — prioritizing the exhale, reducing volume and using lateral rib expansion — it is possible to activate the parasympathetic branch and promote emotional self-regulation.

By raising carbon dioxide tolerance through progressive exercises, the body learns to sustain calm in the face of intense sensations, dissolving panic and anxiety at their physical root.
