The panic loop: how anxiety alters your blood chemistry (and how to stop it in 3 minutes)

The problem: when the mind hijacks the body

An intrusive thought, a pile of work or a family argument can trigger an uncontrollable physical storm in seconds. The heart pounds, the hands sweat, thoughts race chaotically and, suddenly, one of the most terrifying sensations appears: shortness of breath. You feel you are drowning.

Faced with panic, most people instinctively try to gulp as much air as possible through the mouth. Yet science shows this desperate attempt to 'get oxygen' does the opposite: it dramatically worsens the sensation of suffocation, intensifies dizziness and chronifies a state of hyper-alert that feeds the anxiety loop.

The origin: the Bohr effect and the brain's alarms

To understand why big gulps of air worsen anxiety we have to look at blood biochemistry. Psychological stress activates the fight-or-flight response, unconsciously speeding up breathing. This acceleration produces hyperventilation that massively eliminates CO₂ from the blood.

Here the Bohr effect kicks in. Hemoglobin carries oxygen, but to release it needs adequate CO₂. If you strip CO₂ with fast mouth breaths, hemoglobin clings to oxygen and prevents it from reaching the tissues. Paradoxically, though your blood is 99% saturated with oxygen, the brain is starving. Sensing this cellular hypoxia, the brain assumes life-threatening danger and fires an even louder alarm — intensifying fear and panic.

The solution with training: hacking the nervous system

To break the panic loop you don't need to force yourself calm mentally — you need to change your blood chemistry to send the brain a biological safety signal. This is done by modulating CO₂ chemosensitivity with the LSD technique (Light, Slow and Deep).

Close the mouth and breathe exclusively through the nose in a very subtle way (Light), slowing the rhythm to about 6 breaths per minute (Slow) and letting the diaphragm move toward the belly (Deep). By deliberately reducing air volume, you'll feel a mild 'air hunger': CO₂ is accumulating again, allowing oxygen to release to the neurons. The slow rhythm stimulates the vagus nerve and activates the parasympathetic system. In under three minutes the chemistry balances, heart rate drops and perspective returns.
